For 3,000 years thermal water has gushed uninterruptedly from the
bowels of the earth, within a crater, at a temperature of 37.5 °C.
This temperature has a beneficial effect that facilitates the immediate easing of muscular and bone pathologies.
Saturnia thermal waters stimulate the basal metabolic rate, reduce water retention, reactivate the capillary circulation and increase hepatic cell activity with a consequent lowering of blood sugar levels, an increased production of bile required for the digestion of fats and a reduced intestinal absorption of cholesterol.
When drunk on an empty stomach and in small amounts, it facilitates digestion and has a positive effect on gastrointestinal disorders.

THERMAL PLANKTON
The thermal plankton that forms and matures in the Natural Hot Spring is a priceless biogenic treasure of natural minerals and nitrogenous substances, rich in amino acids, sulphur, potassium and magnesium and endowed with extraordinary anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and regenerative properties.
Its effectiveness and tolerability have been demonstrated at the most prestigious Italian university centres. Radical-scavenging activity tests were conducted on this seaweed and its extracts, and they proved to be antioxidants.

From the Spring to the Waterfalls
Rain drops fall on the slopes of Mount Amiata, the water filters through the ground and fissures of rock. So begins the long journey of our source which continues for 40 years underground, gathering power and energy on its way. It gushes to the surface at 500 litres per second, enriched with minerals, into the Natural Hot Spring at the centre of our 5-star Resort.
Travelling at such force it replenishes the pool many times each day. On it rushes, into the Hot Spring Pools next door to our Resort, coursing through five pools, forming water jets and torrents. From there it flows nearly two kilometres through the meadows of Saturnia to eventually burst out into the limestone and form the iconic waterfalls.
According to legend, Saturn– the God of peace and abundance- lost his patience with the constant warfare of men. He hurled a thunderbolt at the ground and hot sulphurous water gushed forth. It flowed through valleys and plains quietening the humans’ spirits. This was the start of a golden age dedicated to agriculture, hunting and love.
Beyond the myth, our history began in Etruscan times with the source bubbling up, gradually baths appeared on the site. And then Terme di Saturnia spring was a renowned source of wellbeing for all. Centurions and soldiers, Popes and farmers have all bathed here.
In 1454 they truly flourished when a permit was granted for the Saturnia Baths. In 1865 they were acquired by the Ciacci Family who created a real spa facility. In 1919 Gaspero Ciacci built the original hotel. Today, Terme di Saturnia is a 5 star Resort, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World and of Starhotels Collezione, with a DAY SPA facility, a Golf course and a pluriaward winning SPA & Medical SPA.
